Strengthening the Assets of Women Living in Disadvantaged Situations: The German Experience

Abstract

In the first part of this chapter, the authors set out to discuss the concept of ‘physical activity’, and its complementarity with health promotion efforts. The authors propose the alternative concept of ‘movement’ that would allow to expand beyond individual level outcome assessments in physical activity promotion efforts. In the second part, the authors apply this concept in a participatory community study with the goal to promote movement among women in difficult life situations. The study used the ‘health asset’ approach of the WHO to develop and implement actions that would promote movement among the women. The methodology that was used within the project to collect, utilize, and evaluate the assets for movement is presented and discussed.
