Abstract

The main contribution of this chapter is to show special considerations applicable to clay nanocomposites. Clay nanocomposites, which comprise clays of nano-scale dimension dispersed in polymer materials, have a unique laminated structure and shape with a high aspect ratio, which provides nanocomposites with fundamental properties superior to those of conventional materials, as well as new functional properties. This chapter focuses on the characteristics of clays, and the manufacture and properties of clay nanocomposites. Organic modification and compounding of clays significantly affect the structure and properties of nanocomposites. Moreover, clay nanocomposites have advantages from the viewpoint of industrial manufacture which make them leading candidates for future high performance materials.
