Abstract
Surgical procedures are performed on the back for a variety of reasons and universally result in some degree of scar formation. Optimally, these scars would result in a barely-perceptible, fine line that blends naturally with the color and texture of adjacent skin. Unfortunately, an optimal scar is rarely the end result, and a patient can be left with a scar that is deemed disfiguring. A disfiguring scar is one which has an appearance outside the accepted norm and which is deemed unsatisfactory by the patient and/or physician.
