Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB)

UMB is designed to deliver mobile broadband wireless access systems that are optimized for high spectral efficiency and short latencies using advanced technologies such as link adaptation, fast handoff, fast power control, inter-sector interference management, and multi-antenna transmission techniques. UMB is the enhancement of CDMA2000 technologies (EVDO Rev-0, A, B, C) in the 3GPP2 standard community [1]. UMB was originally destined to support both FDD and TDD modes, but later on more attention was paid to the development of the FDD mode. As depicted in Fig. 13.1, although all of the previous technologies up to EVDO-Rev B have been based upon code division multiple access (CDMA) air interface, 3GPP2 standard community has decided to embark UMB based on orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) to support higher capacity traffics specially in urban environments. The same decision has been made by 3GPP community to abandon CDMA in favor of OFDMA in their 3G LTE technology [16]. WiMAX on the other hand has started its development based on OFDM and OFDMA [14].
