Abstract
The Internet is reshaping the way in which we compute today. With the advancement of Web and networking technologies, the trend is moving toward distributed computing. The capabilities of an application are no longer constrained by the processing power of a single machine, but rather they are distributed by cooperation of many different machines each providing a specific service. Software is now being seen as a collection of services, and these services can be provided by another party and made available through the network. In this chapter, we take a look at one way in which XML can be used in distributed computing. We take a closer look at the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) and build a sample application using the Microsoft SOAP Toolkit.
