Abstract

The past two centuries have seen tremendous flux in China’s relationship with the outside world. They have also generated attitudes, assumptions and a historiography absorbed by successive generations of Chinese leaders. This historical baggage, including China’s own recent foreign policies and their consequences, form a crucial part of the context of China’s present-day foreign relations.
