Abstract
Henry was born at Greenwich, the son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. He received a rigorous education (his tutors included the poet John Skelton), and became an accomplished scholar, musician, linguist and poet. His elder brother died in 1502, and he succeeded to the throne of England on the death of his father in 1509; he became ‘supreme head’ of the English church (in place of the Pope) in 1534, and King of Ireland in 1540.
