Abstract
Translator’s note: In the British motor industry the terms’ supervisor’ and ‘foreman’ are used interchangeably. In this text the French word maitrise and the German Meister have been translated, variously, as ‘supervision’, ‘supervisory staff’ and ‘supervisors’.
