Abstract
There are many shorthand systems in use and their main purpose is to enable the spoken word to be recorded visually in less time than writing in longhand. Although shorthand and typewriting are usually spoken of in the same context the skills are not related and the ability to do one does not equate with the ability to do the other. The reason why the skills are associated is that most shorthand is typed back rather than written in full. Shorthand systems either use symbols to record speech or they use some system based on letters of the alphabet.
