Abstract

India is a country of 3.3 million km2, comprising 28 states and 7 union territories, with a population of 1.13 billion making it the second most populous country in the world. One-third of India's households are in urban areas and two-thirds in rural areas. Sixty-eight percent of households (56% of rural and 93% of urban) have access to electricity, and 45% have access to toilet facilities. Eighty-eight percent of households use an improved source of drinking water (95% urban, 85% rural), but only 25% have water piped into their dwelling, yard, or plot. One-third of households treat their drinking water to make it potable (National Family Health Survey, 2005–2006).
