Abstract

One might wonder about the relevance to substance abuse treatment and research today of events that took place a century ago, or why “culture” has or should have anything to do with one’s willingness to participate in research or the ability of a treatment plan to succeed. Two examples, discussed in significantly greater detail below, are illustrative.
