Abstract

Strictly speaking, ‘absenteeism’ refers to chronic absence from work. In effect, this is deliberate absence. A business can calculate the level of absenteeism within its workforce (excluding ill-health and genuine absences) by using the following formula:

$${\rm{Absentee rate = }}{{{\rm{number}}\,{\rm{of}}\,{\rm{staff}}\,{\rm{absent}}\,{\rm{ \times }}\,{\rm{100}}} \over {{\rm{Staff}}\,{\rm{total}}}}$$
