Screening Strategies for Infections during Pregnancy in Different Health Systems

CMV infection is an example for screening strategies during pregnancy. For the general obstetric population, no professional groups or government health agencies advise universal serological screening for CMV infection. Among others, the following arguments are made against routine universal screening: 1) Patients who test positive for antibodies still run the risk of reinfecting their foetus from a new viral strain or from the latent virus becoming active again. 2) There is no vaccination that can protect seronegative people from infection. However, targeted screening is advised by some authorities for expectant mothers who are more likely to be exposed, such as those who have close contact with small children.
