International Year of Groundwater—managing future societal and environmental challenges

The 2022 UN World Water Day was named “Groundwater – Making the invisible visible”. The 2022 Water Summit on Groundwater, organized by UNESCO and IGRAC, summarized the groundwater initiatives with the aim to accelerate achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). In response, Hydrogeology Journal (February 2023) featured a topical collection presented by the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH), which pulls together contributions from the IAH Commissions and Networks covering modern hydrogeological topics, such as groundwater quality, transboundary aquifers, coastal aquifers, regional groundwater flow, managed aquifer recharge, and climate change. The collection describes how the challenges and innovation are changing the discipline of Hydrogeology. All eight essays are open access.
