This special issue examines the current state of neurofeedback and brain-machine interfaces.

Editors

  • Martijn Arns

Dr. Martijn Arns is founder and research director at the Brainclinics Foundation and associate professor at Maastricht University's Cognitive Neuroscience department. Martijn specialises in precision psychiatry and stratified psychiatry with a focus on brain stimulation techniques and neuromodulation like neurofeedback and TMS. He focuses on applied neuroscience, aiming to advance and translate research as efficiently as possible to clinical practice in order to benefit patients that need it. He published over 170 scientific journal papers, his work resulted in 5 spin-offs, and he serves as scientific advisor for several (start-up) companies.

  • Niels Birbaumer

Niels Birbaumer is professor emeritus for Behavioral Neuroscience and Medical Psychology at the Univerisity of Tuebingen and the University of Padova. He is the most cited German neuroscientist with about 700 scientific papers and 21 books (i.e. "Your Brain Knows More Than You Think"). His work focuses on controlled treatment studies of neurofeedback and brain-computer interfaces in epilepsy, stroke and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He recently published the first study in a completely paralysed person with implanted microelectrodes in the brain who learned to communicate verbally with the aid of neurofeedback of single cell activity.

  • Tato Sokhadze

Estate (Tato) Sokhadze has a PhD in Human Physiology and completed post-doctoral fellowships in Psychopharmacology at Wake Forest University, and in Cognitive Neurosciences at Rice University. His research interests include application of EEG/ERP brain mapping, neurofeedback, autonomic biofeedback, TMS, tDCS, and other applied psychophysiological and neuromodulation techniques in neurology & psychiatry research. He's a Research Scientist at Duke University(Neurology) with several more adjunct professor appointments. He is the Foundation for Neurofeedback and Neuromodulation Research (FNNR) President. He serves as an Associate Editor of APBI.
