The Contribution of Sustainable Production and Consumption to Green Economy

Responsible production and consumption are associated with crucial factors for the planet and are indispensable components to be evaluated to achieve global sustainable development.The last decades have been observing increase in the global population, extensive use of resources, serious environmental degradation and increased social and economic inequalities around the globe. Concerning consumerism or the rampant consumption of human beings , it is necessary to expand environmental education, directing good habits and practical actions in partnership with public and private agencies. Inappropriate and irresponsible consumption generates large volumes of waste, as well as greenhouse gases. The excessive use of pesticides, used in production worldwide, is another issue related to waste in the production, distribution, and transport of food, with serious consequences for the health of the population. The current economic models lead to serious environmental and health problems, the culture of waste and unsustainable production approaches. Green economy therefore emerges as a process to adjust this path to a more sustainable one, stimulating the transition to economies that are low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive. The low-carbon system implicates the use of clean energy sources, more efficient use of resources, and decrease in waste generation. There is a growing demand for food (quality and quantity) in the face of social, economic, and environmental challenges in the world. So, it is necessary transformative solutions for specific short-term actions with a common vision towards food security.By connecting these issues with the rationale of the Sustainable Development Goal 12, we welcome papers related to environmental, economic, and social aspects of sustainable production and consumption, including food security, organic agriculture, clean energy production, reduction of water waste, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, reuse and recycling of waste, innovative and technological processes for sustainable production and consumption and green industry success stories.

    Luciana Londero Brandli

    Luciana Londero Brandli (Ph.D) is a Professor at the University of Passo Fundo. Her work focuses on sustainability in higher education, the Agenda 2030, Climate Change, Education for Sustainability and Sustainable Cities. She is Deputy Editor of the Encyclopedias of Sustainability in Higher Education and of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. She serves on the editorial board of various journals, supervises a number of students on engineering, environment and sustainability issues and has in excess of 300 publications. She is the co-investigator in Brazil for the research project Transforming Universities for a Changing Climate.

    Amanda Lange Salvia

    Amanda Lange Salvia has a degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Passo Fundo, Brazil, and graduate studies focused on sustainable cities and universities. Her work focuses on the Sustainable Development Goals, the role of universities towards sustainability and the impacts of climate change. Amanda has experience with international studies assessing aspects related to the 2030 Agenda and sustainability in higher education. She is currently a Research Associate of the international research project Transforming Universities for a Changing Climate.

    Leila Dal Moro

    Leila Dal Moro is graduated in Public Management from the Meridional Colegge (IMED), master and doctor in Engineering, Infrastructure, and Environment by the Post-Graduate Program in Civil and Environmental Engineering of the University of Passo Fundo (UPF), Post-doctoral student in Administration of the Business School by the Meridional Colegge (IMED), Brazil. She has books, book chapters, and papers published in the SDG area. Dal Moro is a researcher and develops projects with local actors seeking innovation in family farming aiming responsible production, commercialization, and consumption.
