Collection in Honor of Dr. Jan D. Miller

This special collection is to honor Dr. Jan D. Miller, who retired from the University of Utah as Ivor D. Thomas Distinguished Professor of Metallurgical Engineering in June 2023. Dr. Miller has devoted 55 years to research and to undergraduate and graduate education at the University of Utah as a faculty member. From 2002 to 2013, he was the Chair of the Department of Metallurgical Engineering. During his career at the University of Utah, which began in 1968, he supervised the research of over 100 graduate students who have successfully defended their theses. Dr. Miller is internationally well known for his numerous technical contributions in mineral resource recovery and utilization, specifically in the areas of surface/colloid chemistry, particle technology, coal preparation, mineral processing, hydrometallurgy, and environmental technology, with more than 700 publications and 40 patents. He has served on the SME Board of Directors and is a Past Chair of the Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division of SME. The recipient of numerous honors and awards, Dr. Miller was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1993.

  • Jiaqi Jin, Ph.D.

    Dr. Jiaqi Jin is an Assistant Professor of Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Utah. He earned B.S. degrees in Computer Science and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Science and Technology Beijing in 2011. His Ph.D. thesis on “Wetting and interfacial water structure at selected mineral surfaces” was completed in 2015 at the University of Utah. Before joining academia in 2019, Dr. Jin worked as a metallurgist at mine sites in Colorado, Nevada, and Arizona. His technical expertise focuses on surface chemistry of minerals, characterization of 3D structures in micro and nano scales, and fluid flow in porous media.
