Ocular Surface Diseases

Ocular surface diseases (OSD) such as dry eye disease or blepharitis have become increasingly more prevalent, affecting millions of people albeit often remaining undiagnosed. Additionally, more and more patients experience ocular allergies requiring treatment. A growing amount of research focuses on the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of these diseases. Biomarkers found in tear fluid as well as the ocular microbiome are increasingly recognised as avenues for research. We are launching a Collection on these debilitating chronic diseases to collate new advances in the field and to comprehensively review current developments in OSD research. We are particularly interested in research on the pathogenesis of OSD as well as in studies describing new treatment strategies. We consider both basic and clinical research but strongly encourage authors to submit their experimental work to our collection. We are also interested in high-quality systematic reviews and meta-analyses in this field. Potential topics include but are not limited to the following: Advances in treatment of dry eye disease and blepharitis Basic research on the pathophysiology of OSD Imaging modalities in OSD diagnostics Ocular surface and tear biomarkers OSD as the consequence of ophthalmic surgery The ocular microbiome Ocular surface and aging Recent advances in management of OSD secondary to trauma Role of Artificial Intelligence in OSD.
