Data-intensive Spatial Optimization and Urban Analytics

Achieving sustainable urban development has been one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) since 2015. Urban population growth and associated needs for improving urban sustainability across the globe require major advances in spatial optimization and urban analytics. Spatial optimization has many applications (e.g., site selection for urban facilities, land use planning, and emergency management) for improving urban sustainability and developing smart cities. The past few decades of open data initiatives have resulted in diverse new datasets related to urban infrastructure, operations, and activities. These data streams pose significant challenges and opportunities to spatial optimization and urban analytics. Addressing these challenges and opportunities requires data-intensive integration of spatial optimization and cyber-based geographic information systems (cyberGIS) to realize reproducible urban analytics for problem solving and decision making across a variety of spatial and temporal scales. This special issue explores the frontiers of such integration for fostering synergistic advances of spatial optimization and urban analytics to enable smart cities and urban sustainability. It provides a timely opportunity for researchers to share the newest ideas, innovations, and findings in this vibrant cross-disciplinary context. We are seeking original unpublished papers on the following topics that include, but are not limited to: • Artificial intelligence and machine learning approaches to spatial optimization • CyberGIS for collaborative urban problem solving and decision making • Data-intensive approaches to urban equity, mobility, and health challenges • Geospatial deep learning for smart cities • High-performance and scalable spatial optimization and urban analytics • Multi-scale spatial optimization for emergency management (e.g., COVID-19 pandemic) • Open data and software for reproducible urban analytics • Optimization of urban land use • Spatial optimization of urban facilities • Urban mobility change • Urban safety analysis • Urban transportation and trajectory data analysis • Urban visual analytics
