Biomass and biowaste valorization for materials and energy

Energy security and environmental protection are major challenges faced all across the globe due to the exhaustive use of fossil-fuels. There is a need to shift the current energy spectrum to renewable energy by creating advanced technologies for appropriately utilizing renewable resources. This includes biomass (agro/forestry) for sustainable development. Thus, ongoing research activities aim to increase use of biomass for material and energy provision, particularly in agrarian economies where there is surplus biomass available as a consequence of agricultural activities. Various conversion pathways, e.g., for energy production involving biological and thermochemical routes, are pretty matured, whereas the ones for production of value-added materials and chemical are partly at infancy stage. These technologies are known to be sustainable but the challenge lies in making them economic viable so as to replace the fossil resources in all markets. Thus, this thematic issue addresses the above challenges. The focus of this thematic issue is on original research papers with novel findings and new results meetings the highest scientific standards in the research field outlined above. Review papers are typically rejected. They are only exceptionally accepted if they are tackling a clearly new question and / or providing new and in-depth insights into a specific topic. Papers must be submitted electronically via https://www.editorialmanager.com/bcab/default2.aspx All manuscripts submitted to this thematic issue will go through a stringent peer review process managed by the editorial staff of the journal, and only those that are accepted after peer review will be published. The manuscripts must be prepared strictly following the guidelines of the journal; otherwise, they will be rejected, see https://www.springer.com/journal/13399/submission-guidelines#Instructions%20for%20Authors_Open%20Choice Please check the instructions to authors and the guidelines for submission, see https://www.springer.com/journal/13399 Please also have a closer look at the rules related to self-citation as well as plagiarism. To ensure that all manuscripts are correctly identified for inclusion into the thematic issue, it is important to answer ‘Yes’ to the question ‘Is this submission for a special issue?’ and provide the title “Biomass and biowaste valorization for materials and energy”.
