Special Issue: The Economics of Race, Gender, and Sports

The issues of race and gender are at the forefront of modern sports news. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics women made up almost 50% of the participants. In 2021 there were a record high 12 women in NFL coaching positions. In addition, the Tampa Bay Lightning recently iced the first ever entirely black forward line in the NHL. However, a great deal remains to be explored, with examples such as the ongoing lack of diversity in NFL general manager and coaching positions, as well as incidents such as the recent racist social media comments directed towards NHL player Ethan Bear of Ochapowace First Nation. This special issue will examine the current and historical issues that intersect economics with race or gender, and sports. Submissions will be subject to the usual length and style requirements of JERP and will undergo all of the journal's standard peer review and editorial processes outlined in its submission guidelines, through its normal refereeing process as well as by the guest editors. Abstracts to the special issue can be made by emailing the guest editors anytime until March 1, 2022. A deadline of September 15, 2022 for submissions to the special issue can then be made online via JERP’s online submission portal. The issue is expected to appear in 2023. All inquiries should be directed to the guest editors.
