TEN FEET IS THE PROPER WIDTH FOR A LANE in a street that handles a lot of traffic. But experience demonstrates something that many cities’ codes completely ignore: there are other types of streets. The majority of any community’s thoroughfares do not carry more than a thousand trips per day. So why do so many of them have lanes that are 10 to 12 feet wide?
