Cut the Extra Lanes

When lanes are not needed for traffic, all they do is cause speeding

Abstract

STREETS THAT HAVE MORE LANES than they need cause more injury and death than they otherwise would. The more lanes a street has, the more it feels like a highway, and the more drivers are induced to speed. The more lanes it has, the more opportunities arise for dangerous jockeying from lane to lane. The more lanes it has, the farther pedestrians have to cross. These factors add up to a clear mandate to remove all lanes that are not deemed necessary.
