Abstract

FOR ROUGHLY FIFTY YEARS, the dominant ideology of roadway planning was to eschew street networks in favor of dendritic (branching) systems. In such systems, which characterize suburban sprawl, parking lots and cul-de-sacs lead to collectors, which lead to arterials, which lead to highways, and there is typically only one direct path from any one location to any other.
