Similarity of coat color aberrations in northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus), mink (Neovison vison), and sable (Martes zibellina)

Abstract

The frequency of color aberrations in the Northern fur seal population of Commander Islands was studied. Albino, acromelanism, nonspecific piebaldness, golden, and ferret type color phases were recorded at the frequencies about 10-4. They are phenotypically similar to the same phases in farm bred sables and minks. The evolutionary sense of color aberrations in phenotypic parallelism of color mutations in the Northern Fur Seal, Mink, and Sable is discussed.
