Abstract

FAMA is the low energy part of the TESLA Accelerator Installation, in the Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences. It is a user facility for basic and applied research in the field of modification and analysis of materials with ion beams. The original FAMA was commissioned in May 1998. In June 2010, its upgrading began. The job should be completed in December 2015. The upgraded FAMA comprises three machines and four experimental channels. The machines are a heavy ion source producing beams of energies up to about 500 keV, a light ion source producing beams of energies up to 30 keV, and a proton cyclotron complex delivering beams of energies between 1 and 3 MeV. Two experimental channels enable modification of materials. One of them is connected to the heavy ion source and the other to both sources. The remaining two channels enable analysis of materials. They are connected to the proton cyclotron complex. The program of use of FAMA is focused on new materials and directed to nanotechnologies.
