Erysipelas and cellulitis are now considered as variants of the same bacterial disease. Erysipelas is a more superficial and more acute infection of the upper subcutaneous tissue and dermis. Cellulitis affects the deeper loose subcutaneous tissue. As in any continuum of disease, some overlap can occur. Despite their common etiology, significant differences in presentation, signs, and clinical course are noted.
