Molecular and Cellular Biology of the Blood-Brain Barrier and Its Characteristics in Brain Tumors

  • Chapter
Brain Tumors

Part of the book series: Contemporary Cancer Research ((CCR))

Abstract

The inner milieu of the central nervous system (CNS) is closely regulated by the blood-brain barrier (BBB). By its unique properties, the BBB restricts the entrance of blood-borne large and hydrophilic compounds into the brain, but also tightly controls cellular entry and the supply of nutrients to the brain. In this chapter, we will address the latest advances in both the cellular and molecular biology of this specialized structure, and discuss its functional characteristics and molecular organization in glioma.
