Abstract
Flow equalization and chemical neutralization and are two important components of water and wastewater treatment. Chemical neutralization is employed to balance the excess acidity or alkalinity in water, whereas flow equalization is a process of controlling flow velocity and flow composition. In a practical sense, chemical neutralization is the adjustment of pH to achieve the desired treatment objective. Flow equalization is necessary in many municipal and industrial treatment processes to dampen severe variations in flow and water quality. Both these processes have been practiced in the water and wastewater treatment field for several decades. Thtis chapter will present an overview of these two processes, the chemistry behind neutralization, design considerations, and their industrial application.
