Abstract
Latin America is rarely on the radar in discussions of AIDS; the epidemic arrived there somewhat later than in the wealthier countries of the North, and the devastation caused is incomparably less than that afflicting Africa. The infection rates among adults remain below 2 percent for most countries of the region, far from the 20 to 30 percent rates estimated for Botswana or Zimbabwe. The total numbers of people likely to acquire HIV in Latin America pale when set against the hundreds of millions of Asians now at risk.
