Abstract

Julia’s son Mike was born in June 1928, and while he was always a part of her story, he was often in the background. Only later, after he left home during World War II, did Mike take a central role in Julia’s narrative, and it was generally when he ran into trouble with physical injuries, alcohol, and a disastrous marriage.1
