Abstract

In concluding this book, I wish to return to several important claims made in the introduction. Specifically, the introduction located this research within several different literatures and, in so doing, set forward several related tasks. First, the introduction claimed that the book would build upon earlier analyses of protectionism — further investigating non-commercial motivations for protectionism, and taking up calls for ethical analysis in IPE. Second, the book would exploit the space for counter-discourse established by neo-Gramscians, while taking an explicitly normative approach. Third, it would show how an adequate emancipatory method for IPE requires taking seriously the meaning and importance of culture. This would be achieved by asking two central questions: (i) what are the ethical premises underlying the conventional approaches to cultural policy; (ii) what legitimate alternatives can we envisage? This book has advanced claims on all of these points.
