Abstract
It is worth recalling the ‘twists of fate’ that guided Hans Singer’s development as a development economist. He characterized these events as two scenarios, one logical and gradually unfolding, the other fortuitous and accidental, that led him to leave the mainstream and join the then tiny band of ‘development economists’. The former scenario could be seen as representing continuity, a life intertwined with that of friends and colleagues. The latter was made up of accidents and coincidences.
