Abstract
This chapter reviews the performance of African economies during the post-independence years, with particular emphasis on the 1990s. The aim is to consider the recovery of the second half of the decade in proper perspective. The underlying issues and factors will be examined against the background of the region’s economic performance during the earlier decades of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. In particular, the need for realism concerning African growth prospects will become clear as a result of this discussion
