Abstract
This chapter contextualizes the young Muslim subjects in question. It is impossible to begin to comprehend the participation of youth in popular culture without contemplating on the dynamics of Muslim youth identity formation. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of the roles played by the state and the youth within the context of a global and evolving youth culture will advance a fresh approach to the understanding of youth identity construction. This allows us to explicate the social milieu that gave rise to dominant narratives about young Muslim minorities, as well as illuminate the attempts by the state at managing young Muslims.
