Abstract
Early in my fieldwork in the Republic of Niger I was taking the bus to Niamey, Niger’s capital city, when a young soldier, his machine gun casually pointed at me, asked for my papers at a checkpoint. He looked at the papers and stared at me, the only white person on the bus. Having heard me talking to the other passengers in the local language, he asked in Songhay: “What do you do, Anasaara (white man)?”
