Abstract
This chapter builds upon the previous three to demonstrate how we can use measures of institutions to account for globalization risk. It is critical that managers of global companies understand not only political, economic, and cultural institutions, but also the ways those institutions differ across countries and the risks those differences can pose. To that end, it is important to briefly revisit the concept of institutional distance, which was formally defined in chapter 1 as the dissimilarity (or similarity) in institutional makeup between countries.
