Disability Studies and Higher Education

Abstract

Beginning with the Union of Physically Impaired Against Segregation, foundational documents were produced which stated for larger social consumption the concerns as voiced by people with disabilities. As those with disabilities fought to speak on their own behalf, their concerns were naturally brought into classrooms where they were teaching and also raised by allies in teaching contexts. Professionalization of the field included development of groups such as the Society for Disability Studies, conferences, and a journal.
