The Reform in China and Russia

Abstract

One of the more surprising features of the changes affecting China in recent years has been their effectiveness. China is progressing in every sense, day-by-day taking shape as an economic powerhouse, while politically and economically awakening to the new circumstances that are bringing it closer to the Western world. In a pirouette of supreme virtuosity, it is recycling its old socialist ideas to legitimise an inherently capitalist stance. This is an authentic revolution, and such is the impact and depth of the change that, events like those of Tiananmen apart, it is happening, so far, in a relatively trauma-free and painless way.
