Abstract
In 1984, the imprint of the invisible hand of the Congress could be seen not just in the factionalism within the National Conference, but also in the irreparable rift created in the family of Akbar Jehan and the Sheikh. Political opportunists and carpetbaggers made hay while the unpredictability remained unresolved, destroying political autonomy and creating institutional paralysis in its wake.
