Abstract

There has been a healthy surge of interest in the study of cultural meanings and histories behind musics, giving rise to overlaps in the fields of music, film, gender, and sexuality. Musicology’s interactions with cultural studies, media studies, and critical theory have revolutionized those fields. These overlaps can be theoretically complicated; competency in a variety of fields is necessary to fully dissect these issues. A queer reading in cinema requires an understanding of not only surface narrative, but of music, director, composer, target audience, associated texts, and the conventions of genre.
