Studying OILE: Research Methodologies and Perspectives

  • Geoffrey Sockett
Part of the New Language Learning and Teaching Environments book series (NLLTE)

As this book has set out to suggest, the study of informal language learning, particularly as it is mediated through web tools, is a varied and largely uncharted area. In this chapter, it is hoped that a research agenda for OILE and other modern languages can be sketched out, drawing on the experience of some of the studies discussed so far. Such an endeavour involves a broad view of methodologies in the study of second language learning and teaching, as well as an understanding of the cultural role of certain languages in specific national contexts, which leads to foreign language content becoming part of the private leisure experience of young people in particular.
