Abstract
The previous chapter dealt with what today still remains the dominant human enhancement paradigm; however, other views on human enhancement have started to emerge along with social, technological and political changes across the world. One recent but rapidly growing social and cultural movement that is shaping a different view on human enhancement is transhumanism. Thus, the paradigm to be explored in this chapter is referred to as the transhumanist paradigm. In order to better grasp the values and perspectives held by this paradigm, this chapter starts with an overview of the different concepts that have shaped it—transhumanism, posthumanism and the posthuman.
