Abstract
In its 40 years of existence, the Group of Eight (G8) major market democracies has gradually expanded its membership and participation, embraced virtually all major global issues and taken ambitious actions to fulfill its distinctive mission of globally promoting open democracy, individual liberty and social advance. In doing so it has regularly faced the challenge of adapting to rising powers, especially after the arrival of the post-Cold War, globalizing, twenty-first century world.
