In late February 2014, my email inbox was jammed with press releases global tourism boards congratulating themselves on a successful start to the year. January, the texts read, witnessed high double-digit year-on-year increases for visitor arrivals from China. This data was extrapolated to predict another China-inspired record-breaking tourism year.
