Abstract
What is a friend? Just like love, friendship cannot be boxed off into a once-and-forever definition. It might be loosely described as a relationship arising out of free choice. And even then the notion of freedom is open to question given that social and cultural homogamy tends to be the rule in both love and in friendship.1 However, whereas the chemistry of attraction in a romantic relationship obeys largely hidden laws, the bonds of friendship are perhaps a little less mysterious.
