This chapter sets out the basic structure of the book. It also introduces the key ideas that underpin it: the productive role of communication in generating value in the economy; the disappointment that technological developments have not led to a reduction in work time; the triumph of automation over worker autonomy; and the need to reevaluate the role of networked technologies in society in order to revalue communication itself. This chapter also introduces some of the core ideas of the Autonomist theory of labour and Jodi Dean’s definition of our present socioeconomic system as communicative capitalism
