Abstract
“What should we do?” That was the question on Howard Tuthill’s mind as he walked through his family’s factory one cold winter afternoon in 1930. The grease-laden cast iron machine tools surrounding Howard shone in dim sunlight. Only a handful of the workstations were occupied, making the cavernous space much quieter than in recent years, a sign of the challenging situation the business faced.
