Abstract

In this chapter I document the origin of efforts to promote investment in Africa through the creation of a set of new institutions. Along with initiatives to provide aid and further trade, these new institutional mechanisms to assist private investors developed out of particular historic conditions within which the United States began to assert its economic power in a region dominated by European capital.
