Abstract
Peace and stability has been the key to the dynamism of Asia Pacific region, which in the past few decades has generally been considered the “economic center of gravity” for the world. The economic growth and prosperity in the Asia Pacific region is based on a seamless global trade regime under the multilateral framework of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade/World Trade Organization (GATT/WTO),1 and the US commitment to the security of many of its allies and quasi-allies in the region. Nevertheless, the rise of China has led to an expansion not only in its economic landscape and sphere of influence but also in its military, which is far larger than what could be justified for its national defense.2
